Across Whanganui, the housing crisis is placing increasing pressure on older people. Local agencies report that more elderly residents are experiencing housing insecurity, with some facing homelessness for the first time in their lives. Disturbingly, the number of older people living in vehicles or temporary accommodation continues to rise.
In response to this growing need, Wai Ora Christian Community Trust is launching Te Whare Manaaki, a project to build two affordable one-bedroom rental homes for kaumātua within our existing papakāinga-style community.
Located on land already owned by Wai Ora, each home can be built for approximately $149,000. These long-term rental homes will provide safe, secure, and affordable housing, enabling older members of our community to live their later years with dignity, stability, and peace of mind. The two homes will complement Wai Ora's existing eight-bed community housing development, creating an intergenerational and supportive environment where residents can remain connected to others while maintaining their independence.
The project has the support of City Vision, a network of local churches working together to strengthen community wellbeing. This partnership reflects a broad community commitment to addressing housing insecurity and improving wellbeing for older people. Volunteers will provide practical support during selected stages of the project, helping maximise the value of community investment.
These modest yet comfortable homes will feature a combined kitchen and living area, separate bedroom, bathroom facilities, and their own entrance and parking space.
